In Summary: Metamorphic Rocks Meta. Rocks occur when the structure, texture or composition has changed. Heat and pressure can change the existing minerals into new minerals. Metamorphic rock structures are caused by deformation. (silly putty)

Metamorphic Classification Contact metamorphism: Happens when rock comes in very close contact with a magma chamber. This forms more from heat than pressure. (pancake batter) Regional metamorphism: happens when rock is under tremendous pressure from plate tectonics. Forms more from pressure than heat. (peanut butter cookies pressed with a fork)
