Workshop 1, Best Practices in Learning Satellite Campus Model in co-operation with working life organisations February 21st, 2018 Marja Kopeli, Faculty Coordinator Savonia UAS

Universities of Applied Sciences in Finland (24) Operating licence from Ministry of Education - the Bachelor’s Degrees to run = educational responsibility - free choise to run Master’s degrees on the same study fields

Savonia’s strategy Mission 2020: Savonia UAS is the most influential university of applied sciences in Finland. It is known for its expertise, active role and results. OIS2.0 The development of the students’ expertise is promoted in different study environments by enabling multiform, year-round studying with no ties to place and time. For companies the OIS way of thinking offers a partnership in which students and teachers together with the representatives of the company work on different types of assignments as part of the studies.

Savonia’s first satellite campus organized with companies was in southeast Finland There were a lack of high educated Biomedical Laboratory Technologists and Radiographers in that area. => 2014 started - 24 students in Lappeenranta - 11 students in Kotka At the same time 40 + 30 students in Kuopio

Savonia negotiated a contract with 2 hospitals: Carea and Eksote Savonia’s tasks Funding, curriculum, student selection, pedagogical planning, teaching/guiding/advicing the students, quality assurance, statistics, certificates To organise coaching for hospital staff having a role as a student mentor Hospitals’ tasks (Kotka and Lappeenranta) To organise ”a classroom”, equipments and support for online lectures in hospital area To arrange clinical practice periods for students in hospital To enable use of hospital laboratories and radiograpfy equipments for students To find learning projects for students from the hospitals’ actions and departments

Studying in Kuopio, Kotka and Lappeenranta Cisco video conference tool and equipments

Courses and learning environments, biomedical laboratory technologists Theory courses, online connection 110 ects Courses with laboratory exercises 30 ects In Kuopio in campus laboratories In Kotka and Lappeenranta in the laboratories of the hospitals Clinical practice periods 55 ects In Kuopio normal way In Kotka and Lappeenranta in co-operating hospitals Thesis 15 ects

Study results 2017, survey Both educational models (”normal” and satellite) produce the competences defined in curriculum, from the technical point of view Working life oriented education helps the students to see more widely the biomedical laboratory technologist’s skills, tasks and work as a part of whole health care sector Understanding of the importance of multidisciplinary co-operation seems to be deeper in satellite campus model Ethical understanging and custom-orientation will grow deeper in working life oriented learning

First satellite groups + teachers + hospital staff celebrating passed degree programmes, December 2017
