Do Now: Copy the terms below and decide which of them can be thought of as a system and circle them on your paper. Aquarium Pile of sand Earth Grasshopper Volcano Ocean Food web Bicycle Earth and its Moon A + B = C Water cycle Human Body Box of Nails Density = Mass / Volume Explain your thinking. How did you decide whether something is considered a system?

What is a System? Something with two or more parts that interact. A change in one part of the system will cause a change in the system overall. Systems have boundaries (you can define what IS part of the system and what is not) What are other examples of systems?

Living Things are Systems What makes something a living thing? (an organism) Discuss the talking points on the handout with your group and come up with what your group thinks are the characteristics of life.
