Learning Target: We will review the eras from Natural Texas through Spanish Missions for our test on Thursday Success Criteria: I will complete the study guide so I can prepare for the test on Thursday.

What is an era? How do we put eras in order? An era is a long and distinct period of history with a particular feature or characteristic We put eras in order by a system of chronology dating from a particular noteworthy event 1500,1600,1700

Natural Texas and its People This era basically constitutes all of pre‐history up to the point of contact with Europeans in 1528. This includes natural geologic history as well as what is known about American Indians from the archeological record.

European Exploration This era deals with the interaction between European explorers and American Indians from the point of first contact in 1528 until the first efforts at establishing a permanent Spanish presence through missions in 1682 and 1690. This includes the encounters of Cabeza de Vaca and the numerous expeditions over the next 150 years that defined what the Europeans and American Indians understood about each other and Texas.

What is relative chronology? Placing events in the order they happened relative to one another. You don't have to know necessarily specific dates

What was the effect of the land bridge? It allowed animals and people to migrate (move) to the Americas from Russia/Persia. The people entered through Alaska following their food. They eventually spread throughout America. Humans first reached Texas about 11,000 years ago. We refer to these humans as Native Americans.

Native Americans The first Americans arrive by crossing the land bridge. It is believed that they (Native Americans) arrived in small bands over thousands of years. These bands were migrating in search of food and ended up spread throughout North America. Early people were hunters and gatherers.

Southeastern Tribe Coastal Plains and the North Central Plains Wichita, Caddo, Atakapan Farmers of corn, squash, seeds, beans and melons Lived in permanent villages Caddo were the most advanced of these tribes.

Plain Tribe Great Plains & North Central Plains Comanche, Apache, Kiowa, Tonkawa The Plains Indian tribes were great hunters and were the first to use horses for hunting. The use of horses changed the lives of the Plains Indian tribes forever Because the moved following buffalo herds, the Plains Indians lived in Tipi’s (teepee) which were easily transported by horse.

Hernan Cortes Cortés was a Spanish conquistador (soldier and explorer) who conquered the vast Aztec empire in central America in 1521.

La Salle Given ships, colonists, and soldiers by the French King to start a new colony at the mouth of the Mississippi. He landed at Matagorda Bay instead. He tried to establish a colony, but failed because of attacks by Native Americans and disease. LaSalle left the colony to find a way home and was believed to be shot by his own men. The survivors were found by Spanish soldiers. Spain feared that France would try to claim Texas and renewed their colonization efforts in Texas.

Missions The mission-presidio system: used by Spanish to gain control in other parts of the new world. Missions were Spain’s main way of colonizing and were expected to support themselves. A mission was a settlement set up in Indian territory. Friars, or members of clergy who belong to religious groups, invited Indians to live at the missions.

How and why did missions fail or succeed in Texas? Eventually led to Native Americans death by diseases Most missions failed in East Texas due to Native American or French attacking and lack of funds

Father Damian Massanet Were sent with several priests, and about 100 soldiers to colonize East Texas. Convinced the viceroy of New Spain to colonize East Texas and convert the Caddoes to Catholicism Resulted in many missions in East Texas even though they were failures

Let’s go over the KASE Testing Strategies!!!
