Child Labour By: Daniel Bandi

Child Labour How old were kids in child labour? Kids that were involved in child laboring were ages of 7 and up. Why did poor kids work? Poor children worked because, they didn’t have an education, also their families needed the extra income to survive.

Coal Mines The conditions in coal mines were awful, and what they were doing to their surrounding occupants. Coals were producing massive amounts of pollution, workers were working in dangerous underground conditions, Can poisonous when inhaled for a long time (black lung), Produces methane gas which can explode, Miners had low wages and long hours of working underground, Killer fogs

Textile Mill/Factory The working conditions for children in the textile industry were awful, they were exposed to pollution and dangerous fibrous materials that got into their lungs, noise produced from the machines could be deafening, Food, which was often part of their wages, was often of poor quality, Forced to work long hours, were often beaten, hard and short life.

Apprentice/Workhouse Many parents were unwilling to allow their children to work in these new textile factories. To overcome this labour shortage factory owners had to find other ways of obtaining workers. One solution to the problem was to buy children from orphanages and workhouses. The children became known as apprentices. This involved the children signing contracts that virtually made them the property of the factory owner.

Chimney Sweeper/Trades/Services Chimney sweepers were small boys fitting into small chimneys to clean them out, the boys were possibly orphans or young boys indeed of jobs. The boys had to fit into chimney stacks as small as 9 inchs.

Domestic Worker/Servant Servants were forced to work in factories, also there were tremendous compotation so wages were low. They also preformed the same tasks as men with lower wages.
