Photosynthesis & Respiration. Cells need Energy  Cells need a constant supply of energy.  Animal cells get energy from food, while plant cells get energy.
Cell Energy. From Sun to Cell Nearly all the energy that fuels life comes from the sun. The energy is captured by plants through photosynthesis. Photosynthesis.

For each picture… List all matter represented in the photo. List all energy represented in the photo. Explain how the matter and energy are interacting in the photo.

Types of Energy Thermal (heat) - Sonic (sound) - Mechanical (motion) Electromagnetic (radiation including visible light) - Nuclear (inside atoms) Chemical (stored in the bonds between atoms) - Electrical Photosynthesis starts with electromagnetic (radiation) energy and ends with chemical energy (glucose). Cellular Respiration starts with chemical energy and ends with any or all of the following energy: thermal, mechanical, sound, chemical (ATP).

Cell Membrane all cells have a cell membrane it acts as a barrier between the inside and outside of the cell it controls what goes in and out of the cell

Cell Wall located on the outside of the cell membrane it provides strength, structure and support to the cell found only in plant and some bacteria cells

Cytoplasm fluid inside the cell acts like a shock absorber keeps the organelles from bumping into one another

Vacuole acts as a storage area for the cell much larger in plants because plants make their own food and need large storage areas

Lysosome collects wastes and worn out cell parts breaks down the wastes for disposal

Nucleus the control center of the cell contains DNA directs all of the cell’s activities found in all cells except bacteria

Cell Energy - Photosynthesis energy for life comes from the sun – either directly or indirectly photosynthesis is the process plants, some bacteria and some protists like algae use to capture light and turn it into food these organisms are called producers or autotrophs

Basic Food Chain

Basic Food Chain

Chloroplast the place inside a cell where photosynthesis happens found only in plants, some bacteria, and some protists chlorophyll is the green pigment that soaks up light

Cell Energy – Cellular Respiration animals, fungi, some bacteria, and some protists must consume other living things for energy cellular respiration is the process these organisms used to breakdown food for energy these organisms are called consumers or heterotrophs producers also need to use energy producers also have mitochondria to breakdown the food they make

Mitochondria the place inside a cell where cellular respiration happens found in all cells all living things need to use energy

The Energy Cycle the start of photosynthesis is the end of respiration the start of respiration is the end of photosynthesis

Summary Questions Why do cells have so many parts? What roles do those parts play in helping to keep the cell alive? How do the parts interact? How do cell organelles work together to supply energy for the cell? Why do producers have both chloroplast and mitochondria? How do all living things get energy either directly or indirectly from the sun? What are some ways to show the energy cycle in an illustration?
