Presentism Presentism can be used more loosely to refer to a narrow focus on the conditions of the moment. Saint Augustine proposed that the present is a knife edge between the past and the future and could not contain any extended period of time.

Now come forward to 1950… Ray Kroc gets his first look at the original McDonalds. "Let's Eat Right to Keep Fit" by Adele Davis, was an early entry into the health food movement. The first commercial videotape recorder is introduced. The device is intended for industrial applications, and it quickly revolutionizes the way television programming is produced. Engineers race to produce a practical VCR for consumers.

And follow me forward again to the 1990s… Norplant is the first implant contraceptive approved by the FDA. Dolly the cloned sheep was cloned by scientists at the Roslin Institute in Scotland.

Now what? Research work by the UK's Open University suggests there are perhaps 50 or so small, rocky bodies on which there is liquid water and possibly life. (April 2004) Scientists are to implant tiny computer chips in the brains of paralysed patients which could read their thoughts'. Dr Richard Apps, University of Bristol (April 2004) Increasingly, parents are using high-tech methods to track everything from where their children are and how far they are driving to what they buy, what they eat and whether they've shown up for class.
