Details about Microscopes The microscope we will be using has more than one lens. It is called a compound microscope. To properly carry a microscope you must use BOTH hands, one by the arm and one on the base. Always focus the microscope on low power before going to the other power objectives. The coarse adjustment knob is used to focus the LOW power objective lens. The revolving nosepiece lets you change objectives and will click into place. You should always look around the side of the microscope to be sure the objective does NOT hit the slide. The diaphragm controls the amount of light. Never use direct sunlight as a light source for microscopes that do not have their own light source. Hold a slide by the label or the edges of the slide to keep it clean. Holding a prepared slide up to the light is useful in locating the item before placing the slide on the stage. The black line you see when looking through the eyepiece is a pointer used to show where something is on the slide. ENEMIES Of the Microscope: Oil, water, fingerprints, sunlight, dust
