LNHS Freshmen Parent Orientation Emily Presser, Counselor Lisa Fletcher, Assistant Principal Gina Johnson, School Social Worker

Transition Tips GET A LOT OF SLEEP AVOID STAYING UP LATE PLAYING FORTNITE AVOID WATCHING YOUTUBE UNTIL 2AM DO HOMEWORK EVERY NIGHT STUDY NOTES BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN TO PARENTS WHAT YOU ARE DOING IN EACH CLASS WRITE THINGS DOWN - DUE DATES ARE IMPORTANT HELP YOUR CHILD PLAN AND PRIORITIZE AVOID MISSING SCHOOL - 10 ABSENCES = LOST CREDIT ADVOCATE FOR YOUR CHILD TO TAKE THE REIGNS - HAVE THEM TALK TO TEACHERS AS FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE!

Strengthening Student Advocacy We know how easy it would be if we took over for our kids. Learning to tie shoes Problem solving is part of winning at life. Mistakes are opportunities for growth = GRITTY KIDS Practice Help kid work through struggles vs rescuing

ISN’T ASSIGNED THAT NIGHT THERE IS STILL HOMEWORK!!!!!!!!! What Homework? EVEN IF HOMEWORK ISN’T ASSIGNED THAT NIGHT THERE IS STILL HOMEWORK!!!!!!!!! JUST DO IT! Check Canvas! Don’t get stuck!!! Help children work around

Need Extra Help? Start with the teacher - come before or stay after school for extra help when needed. Ask counselor for additional resources if meeting with teacher doesn’t seem like enough. Outside tutoring

Organizational Strategies Help student organize for each class Sit down and go through everything frequently to stay ahead of the paper monster that sometimes lives in backpacks. Keep items separated by class. 2. Help students go over their notes- some are online- if they say there aren’t any notes have them pull up Canvas for that class and check daily work. Think about who taught you to take notes, how old were you, what style did you use? Prioritize workload. Keep dates clear- Maybe some sort of planner./ google calendar - share it with you. I find that is what I work on with my child the most.

School Involvement -- Building Relationships We know that kids thrive when they are connected to school. Help encourage involvement. SPORTS, CLUBS, ACTIVITIES, MUSIC, DEBATE, CAREER CENTERS, NORTHLAND CAPS…...ETC. CHECK WEBSITE FOR MORE INFO ON ALL OF THESE THINK BACK TO THE CARING ADULT THAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE FOR YOU IN SCHOOL AND THE KIDS THAT MADE IT WORTHWHILE. FIND A POSITIVE CROWD. WHAT WILL BE YOUR LEGACY?

Communication Is The Key! Please avoid waiting too long to contact teachers about concerning grades. Check powerschool often so that you aren’t surprised by grades and attendance. Always contact the teacher first when situations arise. There are always two sides to a story. Counselors and administrators are always there for you as well. Be proactive.
