Why might this be an issue for Henry VII? Think – Pair – Share: Sunday, 09 December 2018Sunday, 09 December 2018Sunday, 09 December 2018 Key idea: Henry VII’s claim to the throne came through his mother Margaret Beaufort who was descended from John of Gaunt, the son of Edward III. His father was the son of a minor nobleman and servant at court who just so happened to get lucky and marry Catherine of Valois for love after her husband Henry V died! Henry VII’s claim to the throne was therefore matrilineal. This meant it came from a woman and not a man. Why might this be an issue for Henry VII? Think – Pair – Share: What other issues can you predict Henry will face? Quick starter and opportunity to revisit understanding of the wars of the roses. Students could be asked, using this image, which key event of the wars of the roses we will be zooming in on today (SoW states students should have a good knowledge of the battle of Bosworth).
