WLAN Interworking scenarios May 2003 doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/229r1 May 2004 WLAN Interworking scenarios Cheng Hong, Tan Pek Yew (Panasonic) WIEN 14th May 2004 Cheng Hong, Tan Pek Yew Tan Pek-Yew, Matsushita Electric Ind.

Interworking scenarios – example from 3GPP May 2004 Interworking scenarios – example from 3GPP Assumptions: WLAN1(s) interworked with 3GPP-H (HPLMN); WLAN2(s) interworked with 3GPP-V(VPLMN); WLAN3(s) not interworked. State Description WLAN Coverage 3GPP PLMN Coverage 1 Switch on No coverage 2 Single network WLAN1 coverage Coverage only available from WLAN1(s) 3 Overlapping 3GPP & WLAN coverage Single network coverage Home network coverage 4 Single network 3GPP-H coverage (HPLMN) 5 Multiple networks 3GPP coverage Coverage from home network and other operator(s) 6 Network(s) 3GPP-V coverage (VPLMN) Coverage from visited network(s) only 7 Coverage only available from WLAN2(s) Coverage from visited network only 8 Multiple 3GPP & Multiple WLANs WLAN1(s) & WLAN2(s) (NOTE 1): Coverage from Home and Visited Networks 9 Multiple WLAN coverage Coverage available from WLAN1(s) & WLAN2(s) 10 Single WLAN2 network coverage Coverage only available from WLAN2(s) 11 Multiple WLAN coverage Coverage available from WLAN1 & WLAN3 12 WLAN(s) coverage not interworked Coverage only available from WLAN3(s) NOTE 1 : May also include WLAN 3 (Not Illustrated) Cheng Hong, Tan Pek Yew

Interworking scenarios May 2004 Interworking scenarios Interworking scenario I: non-roaming WLAN interwork with Home Network Interworking scenario II: roaming WLAN interwork with a Visited Network To the WLAN, the interface should be the same This result in the network selective issue, e.g. a WLAN could be shared by the home network and the visitied network Cheng Hong, Tan Pek Yew

Interworking service types: May 2004 Interworking service types: WLAN UE accessing local WLAN services e.g. Direct connection to Internet e.g. local WLAN services, services, e.g. printing, etc. requires only local IP connectivity and necessary access control WLAN UE accessing services from home network e.g. accessing IMS services from 3G network requires more than WLAN local IP connectivity needs control and enforcement: operator’s requirement e.g. To access IMS the UE has to be in the same address domain E.g. Security requirements, Cheng Hong, Tan Pek Yew

Mobility issues Mobility between different WLANs May 2004 Mobility issues Mobility between different WLANs not in the scope of other standardization body’s scope in the scope of IEEE 802.11 – WIEN Mobility between WLAN and external network Also studied in the other standards, e.g. 3GPP It is identified as interworking scenario4 and above It also requires the IEEE to work at the WLAN side of the support Cheng Hong, Tan Pek Yew

May 2004 Interworking scope Work on the service establishment issues (for both services inside WLAN and external network) Includes access control in the WLAN and interface to the external network Includes the address control, and the interface to the external network Includes enforcement control in WLAN and the interface to the external network Includes the QoS control in WLAN for the interworking and the interface to the external network Work on the mobility support on the transition between 802.11 and external network when MT access service from external network on the transition between 802.11 networks when the MT access service from an external network Cheng Hong, Tan Pek Yew

Interworking requirements May 2004 Interworking requirements Security It shall not compromise security of the external network when a terminal access service from a WLAN existing security schemes in WLAN shoul be reused in a proper way to provide Enforcement of policy It shall be possible to enforce policy regarding the service access by the MT It shall be possible to apply consistent policy in the WLAN for MT according to its subscription at home network QoS It shall be possible to provide consistent QoS support in the WLAN It shall be possible to map and enforce QoS requirements from external network to WLAN access technology The QoS provided shall comply with MT’s subscription at home network Cheng Hong, Tan Pek Yew
