Bell Ringer What do you know about the war in the Pacific during WWII?

Facts… Douglas MacArthur: General in charge of allied forces Doolittle’s Raid: April 18, 1942: Lt. Doolittle led 16 bombers to attack Tokyo. Battle of the Coral Sea: Americans and Australians. May 1942: over the course of 5 days, turned Japanese invasion back.

Battle of Midway Japanese planned attack on Hawaii. Admiral Chester Nimitz moved to block the attack. Sent planes to bomb the approaching ships, considered the “avenging of Pearl Harbor” Battle of Midway was the turning point of the war in the Pacific.

Iwo Jima Iwo Jima was the base with the most power. Allies wanted to capture the base, to take back hold of Japan. Deadly battle Cut off the supplies Raised the flag in victory

Battle of Okinawa April 1945: U.S. Marines invaded Okinawa. Attacked by Kamikaze pilots. Once ashore more was to come, by June 1945, more than 7,600 Americans died. 110,000 Japanese lost

Manhattan Project Directed by J. Robert Oppenheimer 600,000 people to create it. Even President Truman was unaware of the project until he became president. Tested in New Mexico, July 16, 1945. Visible 180 miles away.

Atomic Bomb Dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki Flown by Enola Gay Hiroshima: code name “Little Boy” Nagasaki: code name “Fat Boy” 200,000 people died from direct hit of bombs, thousands more to come.

Aftermath Today, both cities still have high rates of radiation that cause birth defects and cancer. It was the most effective way to end the war.

Japanese Internment February 19, 1942: FDR signs an order removing Japanese people from California, Washington, Oregon, Arizona. 110,000 were relocated 2/3 were nisei
