The resulting dendrogram indicates the order in which patients were grouped based on similarities in their patterns of gene expression. Age, sex, etiology, and histologic findings for each patient are shown under individual roots. The gene cluster data are presented graphically as colored images, and the genes with the most similar patterns of expression are placed adjacent to each other. There were 2 clusters of genes that were preferentially up-regulated in (A) chronic hepatitis B or (B) chronic hepatitis C.
