Fig. 2 Hierarchical clustering of 26 patients with chronic hepatitis and all 1080 genes analyzed using Cluster and TreeView software (http://rana.Stanford.EDU/software/). The resulting dendrogram indicates the order in which patients were grouped based on similarities in their patterns of gene expression. Age, sex, etiology, and histologic findings for each patient are shown under individual roots. The gene cluster data are presented graphically as colored images, and the genes with the most similar patterns of expression are placed adjacent to each other. There were 2 clusters of genes that were preferentially up-regulated in (A) chronic hepatitis B or (B) chronic hepatitis C. Fig. 3 Hierarchical clustering of 26 patients with chronic hepatitis for each functional subset of genes. The clustering was performed using (A) apoptosis and cell cycle–related genes, (B) cell–cell interaction genes, (C) cytokine genes, (D) transcription factor genes, and (E) stress response genes. The clustered genes are shown in the vertical direction under the dendrogram of patients, which is the same in A–E.
