Our city Saint-Petersburg has many landmarks and one of them that is Summer Garden. The Summer Garden is located where the Fontanka River flows out of the Neva River, next to the Field of Mars and St. Michael's Castle.

It was founded in 1704 by order of Peter the Great, who was personally involved in planning it, and is laid out according to strict geometrical principles. The Summer Garden is home to marble statues acquired from Europe especially for Russia's new capital, and also to rare flowers and plants, as well as fountains.

The Summer Garden is also the location of Peter the Great's first Summer Palace, built by the great Italian architect Domenico Trezzini and still there today. This Summer Palace - a two-storey Dutch-style affair with a high roof and comparatively modest interior - was one of St. Petersburg's first stone palaces. Its original interiors have been preserve to this day.

At the whole territory of summer garden there are sculptures, pavilions, grottos. There were the fountains before the flood in 1777 that crushed down the system of fountains. In 1725 Summer Garden has more than 100 statues and busts, in 1736 there were more than 200. But today you can see only 79 sculptures in Summer Garden.

In 1770-80 Summer Garden was surrounded by lattice which was made by projection of Y. Felten and P. Yegorov. That lattice was so beautiful that it became one of the St. Petersburg symbols.

The Mattarnovi's Grotto was the first Russian museum of sculptures The Mattarnovi's Grotto was the first Russian museum of sculptures. It has collection of 26 sculptures but the 1777's flood damaged it. In 1826 a Coffee House which was projected by Rossi took the place of Grotto. In 1827 Summer Garden was decorated with a Charlemagne's Tea house. The bust of I.A.Krylov was established next to the Tea House in 1855.

The Summer Garden was favourite place for walking of the Petersburg aristocracy in XIX. There often were А. S. Pushkin, I.A. Krylov, V.A. Zhukovsky, I.A. Goncharov, A.A. Block and many other figures of Russian culture.

At the beginning of The Great Patriotic War during two months statues and busts were covered in the ground. In the Garden was located anti-aircraft battery. After war Summer Garden was completely reconstructed. Statues and busts had been return to their places.

A comprehensive restoration of Summer Garden took place in 2009-2011 and nowadays Central St Petersburg’s oldest park is loveliest place for tourists and citizens as it was before.
