THE NEW DEAL A hand out or a hand up?

FDR offers a New Deal Franklin Delano Roosevelt wins the election of 1932 for the Democrats. FDR offers the Forgotten Man Speech which boosts his popularity with Americas struggling citizens While waiting to gain the presidency FDR brings together the “Brain Trust”

The Hundred Days Passed more than 15 major pieces of legislation because of majority in Congress/Senate Fireside chats on the radio Emergency Banking Relief Act (EBA) Closes down banks and evaluates them Only opens up banks that are deemed fit to survive FDIC Government backing up to 5000 bucks to encourage Americans to save

Alphabet Continues Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) Lower production and get paid by Govt. Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC) Gave jobs to young men Sent most of their pay back to the family Planting, parks, construction etc National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) Federal govt. could give state jobs and funding

Agencies on Trial Deficit Spending: Based on John Maynard Keynes idea FDR decides to push for legislation that would give him power over the Judicial Branch!! (court packing) Supreme Court and everyone else gets worried that the President is overstepping his bounds. Deem the NIRA and the AAA unconstitutional Replaced them with new works projects

FDR continues Works Progress Administration (WPA) Gave lots of jobs for building projects Social Security Act (SSA) Offered pensions and unemployment compensation Federal Housing Administration (FHA) Offered people loans to repair or purchase homes Rural Electrification Administration/Tennessee Valley Authority Projects for utilities

How much did all these programs do? Lots of people have argued that the projects helped and hurt the American Economy. Although a lot of debt was accrued by this deficit spending it gave hope to the people. “We have provided the machinery to restore our financial system. . .and it is up to you to support and make it work”

The people’s reaction “I do think that Roosevelt is the biggest-hearted man we ever had in the White House. . . It’s the first time in my recollection that a President ever got up and said, ‘I’m interested in and aim to do something for the working’. Just knowing that for once. . . There was a man to stand up and speak for him, a man that could make what he felt so plain nobody could doubt he meant it, has made a lot of us feel a sight better even when there wasn’t much to eat in our homes”
