A New World: Applications of Biotechnology Biotechnology has been active in the pharmaceutical and medical industries longer than it has been part of any other entity e.g. penicillin and other antibiotics are synthesized through biotechnological processes. Enzymes are used in the brewing process for making beer and other alcoholic beverages. As the beer industry continues to grow and thrive, these biotechnological techniques will be implemented more and more. DNA, the genetic code of all living things, can be edited with biotechnology. Genome editing is a new technology that allows scientists to manipulate genetic information. In the future, this type of gene therapy could be used for cancer prevention and treatment. Fruits, vegetables, and other consumable agricultural products can be genetically modified through biotechnology. Transgenic plant technology was the starting point for the same type of genome-editing biotechnology that is being researched on human somatic cells..

Industry and Investment China has lead in biotech-related agricultural developments since 2013 with the highest volume (42%) of research. China’s local and federal governments heavily fund biotechnology initiatives. Developing cities receive much of this investment. In the first quarter of 2018, China invested in US $1.4 billion worth of US biotechnology initiatives. China follows a policy system that allows for fast approval and implementation of biotechnology-focused clinical trials.
