Ruby Bridges By Livia Drazek

Early Life Ruby Nell Bridges was born on September 8, 1954 in Tylertown, Mississippi. She was the oldest of Abon and Lucille Bridges’ eight children. When she was 4, her family moved to New Orleans so her parents could find better jobs.

What is she famous for? In 1954 Ruby was the first African American child to attend a white public elementary school in the deep south states of Georgia. It was a big deal back then because black people could not go to all white schools!

Character traits with support Ruby Bridges was brave because she was the first black student to go to a white school. She showed empathy because she knew what it felt like to be labeled as different.

Major accomplishments She established the Ruby Bridges Foundation, which used educational initiatives to promote tolerance and unity among schoolchildren. Bridges toured the country promoting coles’s book and royalties went to her foundation.

Interesting facts Robert Coles studied the effects of segregated schools on children and the reaction of children to extreme stress and crises by writing about Ruby’s experiences. In 1996, Ruby participated in the Olympic torch relay. In 1998, her story was retold in a Disney made for television movie called Ruby Bridges.
