Introduction Public speaking is the number one fear Ranks above death and rattlesnakes Can lead to nervousness, anxiety, fear Many students are required to give presentations for one or more classes

The 6 Steps Understand the requirements What about PowerPoint? Organize and practice Don't speak too fast Develop good eye contact Ask for feedback

- 1 - Understand the Requirements Persuasive vs. explanatory How long do you have? Consider visual aids or handouts

- 2 - What about PowerPoint? Slides on an overhead projector Whiteboard Enhance your presentation Keep your audience engaged

- 3 - Organize and Practice Rehearse in front of friends or family Ask them to critique you Ask for feedback Practice again Practice some more

- 4 - Don't Speak too Fast Very common to speak more quickly when nervous Harder for your audience to understand Your audience should connect with you Practice slowing down your speech Tape record yourself so you can hear how you sound

- 5 - Develop Good Eye Contact What is good eye contact? Maintain good eye contact Memorize or know as much of your presentation as you can Use note cards as a last resort
