P s a lm 39 1. Verses 1-5 The psalmist opens up his song to God in a very strange and different way. He opens up with the announcement that he is going to keep silent. Vs. 1 – the psalmist seems to be in the company of the wicked and he declares that he will remain silent

P s a lm 39 Job 2:10 – Job rebukes his wife for her advice and does not sin with his lips Psalm 34:13 – we should always keep our tongue from evil and our lips from speaking deceit

P s a lm 39 Vss. 2-3 – The problem is that he kept silence even when he should have been speaking good things Vs. 2 – he did not speak when he should have Vs. 3 – he was tired from his silence and he could hold his silence no more We should never be this silent especially when the good of others is involved.

P s a lm 39 Acts 4 & 5 – the apostles knew they had to speak the things of Jesus Christ Gal. 2:11-21 – Paul knew that he had to say something to Peter Luke 24:32 – The two who walked with Jesus felt this burning of knowledge well up within them. Jer. 15:16 – the prophet speaks of God’s word rejoicing his heart Gal. 6:9 – do not grow weary in doing good

P s a lm 39 Verses 4-5 – the psalmist recognizes his brief life before God. We should always remember that no matter what is happening to us today it is nothing but a vapor in the expanse of eternity. The entire book of Eccl. is a treatise on the meaning and purpose of life and just how vain and futile life is when we live for the day.

P s a lm 39 2. Verses 7-11 In these verses the psalmist recognizes God and that the trials that plagued him were because of his transgressions. Vs. 7 – his hope is in God just as ours is Vs. 8 – deliverance belongs to God Vs. 9 – he knows that God is in charge of this correction Vs. 10-11 – a plea for relief from iniquity

P s a lm 39 We must realize the truths that the psalmist is singing of. James 5:7-8 – be patient waiting on God who will establish your heart Rom. 15:13 – our God of hope fills us with joy and peace that we may abound in hope 2 Cor. 4:16-18 – do not lose hope but be renewed

P s a lm 39 Acts 3:19 – obedience to the Gospel produces the times of refreshing because our sins our blotted out 1 Cor. 15:54-57 – death is swallowed up by Christ and has no sting, no victory Heb. 12:5-6 – the chastening of the Lord is fruitful for the soul

P s a lm 39 3. Verses 12-13 The psalmist prays for God’s attention to his prayers. He does not want to be a stranger to God. He is praying for God’s mercy.

P s a lm 39 Heb. 5:7 – our perfect example is Christ offering up His prayers in tears 2 Kings 20:5 – Hezekiah offered up tearful prayers 1 Peter 3:12 – God’s hears the prayers of the righteous Matt. 7:21-23 – Jesus will not recognize those who did not obey; they will be strangers 1 Peter 2:11-12 – if we walk as strangers here in obedience to God we will be known by Him at the judgement Phil. 4:13 – Christ is our strength daily
