Figure 1 Net absorption for total calories (kcal/d) during the 3 study periods. In the histograms, intakes (light gray) and losses (black) are above and below the 0 line, respectively, with dark gray representing the net absorption. ETF, exclusive tube feeding; OCEF, combined oral with enteral feeding; OF, oral feeding. ¥P < .01. Figure 3 Transplantation of ASGPR-enriched hES-derived hepatocytes in uPA-SCID mice. Sorted on based on surface ASGPR expression, 100,000–200,000 hES-derived cells were transplanted into immune-deficient Alb-uPA SCID mice. After transplantation, (A) human albumin and human alpha-1-antitrypsin levels were measured by ELISA. At 75 days after transplantation, the serum of these animals contained 1000–2000 ng/mL human albumin and alpha-1-antitrypsin. (B) Immunohistochemistry was performed on liver sections of transplanted animals, and small clusters of human cytokeratin-18 (CK18)-staining engrafted cells, which stain dark brown, with hepatocyte morphology were present throughout the liver. Figure 4 Representative photographs of the plates containing colonies derived from 2000 EpCAM+ or EpCAM− HuH7 cells (upper panel). Colony formation experiments were performed in triplicate (mean values ± SD; middle panel). Cell invasiveness of EpCAM+ and EpCAM− cells was measured using the Matrigel invasion assay (lower panel).
