Catalase Catalase is an enzyme that breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen Hydrogen peroxide is damaging to cells, so all living things possess catalase to break down hydrogen peroxide What happens when you put hydrogen peroxide on a cut? What is going on chemically? Why would Ms. Poole not use hydrogen peroxide?

Catalase

Lab Objectives Using activated yeast (as our catalase source) you will determine how various environmental factors affect enzyme function You must complete multiple trials of your control and experimental groups To get quantitative data easily, we will use small discs of paper soaked in catalase solution As the disc rises up, what is happening? How does this tell us anything about the rate of reaction?
