8-5.4 To restore SC govt. and society to pre-Civil War condition Did not believe in Social Equality. Redeemers & Bourbons Creditors would have first claim to a farmer’s crop if they were in debt; kept them in a cycle of debt Different ways to prevent African Americans from voting Working someone else’s land in exchange for shelter, food, and a small portion of the crops Segregation is okay as long as facilities are “separate but equal” Making segregation legal; hospitals, movies, restaurants, schools, beaches, public facilities

8-5.6 Party created to help poor farmers have a voice in government Ben “Pitchfork” Tillman Both were land grant colleges; Clemson was created as an agricultural college Allowed segregation in schools and public places; disenfranchised African Americans by adding stricter voting laws Controls the sale of alcohol by limiting the amount you can purchase from a state controlled store Looked out for the political interests of small farmers

8-5.5 Upcountry; fast flowing rivers that provide power for the mills Plentiful, cheap, supported family; children could easily repair machines with small hands Rice (Carolina Gold); indigo Caused millions of dollars in damage and impacted the land and agriculture; difficult because SC was still recovering from the Civil War 5. In the North; because there were factory jobs available People moved from rural areas (farms) to urban areas (cities and mill villages)

8-5.8 In the North; because there were factory jobs available People moved from rural areas (farms) to urban areas (cities and mill villages) ---------------------------------------------------------------- 3. move forward and make improvements to society; government reforms, education, prohibition, labor laws, women’s suffrage 4. Outlawing the sale, purchase, and consumption of alcohol; people find ways around the new law (bootlegging, moonshine, etc…)

Review Questions People of the Back Country/Up Country took the laws into their own hands; the Circuit Court Act Rice and indigo Eli Whitney; increased the need for more slaves Longhouses Because of their mistreatment by British military during battles 1-2 Spain Federalists supported a strong central government and anti-federalists wanted stronger state governments Export more goods than you import to create a favorable balance of trade Tariffs (taxes on imported goods)
