Presentation transcript:

Compiling an IR Policy Institutional Repository Workshop 1 – 3 April 2009 Presented by ina.smith@up.ac.za Each university or institution also needs to research and write their own policies and regulations on copyright and intellectual property, preservation, open access, metadata etc. What will be helpful here is to get together a Policy Advisory Group that can play an advisory role in the decision making process. Keep on revisiting your policy as new needs arrive and as you grow in experience. Also be prepared to change your policies as the repository matures.

IR Groups IR Steering Committee – Strategic issues IR Policy Advisory Group – Policy decisions IR User Group – Operational issues and implement policy decisions

Policy Advisory Group Advice on all policy decisions – related to services, standards, functionality Help determine IR’s policies on content submission, privacy and licensing issues etc. When group’s decisions have significant financial, service or public relations impact, the issues may be referred to the library’s governing body, made up of senior library administrators, for endorsement (Barton & Waters 2005)

IR Policies IR Policy – Example Part 11 of manual – IR Policy Advisory Group Collection Policy – Template – Subject Librarian in Collaboration with IR Manager and Dept.

Bibliography Barton, M.R. & Waters, M.M. 2005. Creating an Institutional Repository: LEADIRS Workbook. MIT Libraries.
