Introducing Sylvia Plath Date:

Do we need to know about a poet’s life to understand their poetry? What do you think of this poet’s mood from the following quotes and why?

Sylvia Plath (1932-1963) suffered from clinical depression for most of her adult life and after multiple attempts, she committed suicide through poisoning. Her poetry is important to read because of how intense or extreme her search for meaning is. Plath’s desperate and dramatic approaches reveal ways for the reader to examine the world.

Much of Plath’s work has to do with finding inspiration and motivation Much of Plath’s work has to do with finding inspiration and motivation. Your task now is the same. Create a small list of what you like, what you wish for and what you talk about most. This will be a list of what inspires and motivates you. For example, Plath loved her family, poetry and nature; as seen in these pictures. Mr. Dunne likes money, anime, martial arts and other things which are unfortunately less poetical.

Overall, Plath’s poetry is full of ideas, mesmerising images, honest and deep thoughts with no sugar-coating. Almost all of these are destructively negative, which makes her poetry disturbing. She callously rejects hope, cruelly picks out the worst aspects in everything and reminds us how important the search for meaning is.
