Properties of Matter
Physical Properties Can be observed without changing the identity of the substance Example: Color, mass, and shape of a ball
Physical Properties can be Observed and measured State- solid, liquid, gas Melting point- solid to a liquid Boiling point- liquid to a gas Dissolving
Physical properties help determine uses Are your socks clean? Will your books fit in your backpack? Do your clothes match? Example: Car frames & antifreeze What other physical properties help us determine how we can use a substance?
Density is a physical property Density- measures how much matter is contained in a certain volume of a substance. Equation: If 10 cm of ice has a mass of 9.17 g, what is the density of ice? A piece of tin has mass of 16.52 g, and a volume of 2.26 cm. What is the density of tin?
More Mass- Denser Less Mass- Less dense
Chemical Properties Substance changes into a new substance either by combining with other elements or by breaking apart into new substances Examples: Flammability- ability to burn Reactivity- capacity of a substance to combine with another substance to make a new substance
Physical and chemical properties are different You can observe physical properties without changing the identity of the substance CAN be reversed!!! You can observe chemical properties only in situations where the identity of the substance is changed CAN NOT be reversed!!!
Physical property or chemical property? a. reacts with water b. is red c. is shiny and silvery d. melts easily e. boils at 100 degrees f. is nonflammable g. has a low density h. tarnishes in moist air
