Age of Imperialism Introduction

Imperialism: one country’s domination of the political, economic, and social life of another country How? Primarily through the development of colonies; or the process of colonization.

Age of Imperialism 1800-1914 European nations and the United States controlled vast majority of the world.

Nationalism What is it? Prompted rival European nations to build empires as they competed for increased power and recognition.

Industrial Revolution Increased need for raw materials and new markets. New products needed new materials from new territories.

Religious Fervor & Racial/Cultural Superiority Inspired Europeans to force their beliefs and cultures on faraway places.

New opportunities for imperialists: People felt a need to bring their beliefs to those they believed to be unenlightened. i.e. missionaries in Africa, bringing education, discouraging traditions, Social Darwinism Colonies needed loyal people to run the newly acquired territories. European leaders persuaded their people to move to distant lands for new opportunities and riches (possibilities for HUGE rewards).

Imperialist nations gained new lands through… Negotiating for it. (Making treaties with the people who lived there.) Buying it. (From other European nations.) Taking it through military might. (This was most common.)

Forms of Imperialism Colony: Territory that an imperial power rules directly.

Forms of Imperialism Protectorate: Territory with its own government that is guided by foreign influence. Sphere of Influence: Region in which an imperial power holds exclusive investment or trading rights. Form established was based on the size of the area and population being controlled.

The sun never sets on the British Empire
