What Other Factors Affect Characteristics?

a way of acting that is passed from parents to offspring instinct a way of acting that is passed from parents to offspring

Nesting is an instinctual behavior.

These behaviors are all instinctual.

Instincts are usually shared by all members of a species or by all the males or all the females. Males try to impress females. Females protect their young.

Some instincts are so strong that can lead to comical results!

Most human behavior is thought to be learned, but we are born with a few instincts.

Are there other human “instincts”? Be cautious of new foods Compete for resources Keep yourself alive Be wary of “outsiders” Be curious/adventurous Imitate others

Animals acquire many behaviors through experience… Cats are born with the instinct to hunt, but… …they must learn the best ways to track and kill.

You were born with… You learned to eat with a fork and spoon. …the instinct to eat. You learned to eat with a fork and spoon.

Not all learned behaviors are used for survival.

Service animals are trained to do tasks to help people with disabilities.

Some dogs are trained to help police.

Some service animals aren’t even dogs!

environment all the living and nonliving things that surround and affect an organism

When an environment changes, all the things that live there are affected.

Destruction of an environment can be man-made or natural. Deforestation (logging) Forest fire

Sometimes environmental destruction is accidental or even unintentional. Oil spill Fencing

Pollution kills many plants and animals.

Pollution can have other harmful effects on wildlife.

Conservation is the preserving or protecting of natural resources.

Each person can have a role in protecting the environment.

Cleaning and restoring the environment is called reclamation.

Reclamation can be costly and take a great deal of time.
