Today 114 Community Colleges in California It all began with 22 colleges in 1960 with the development of the MASTER PLAN for HIGHER EDUCATION (Donahoe Act) in California Designated different missions of University of California (research, PhD granting), California State Universities (vocational, technical, and teacher training), and Community Colleges

Who is likely to choose the community college path in California? Have not decided on academic or career goals and want to explore Have not met requirements for freshman admission and want additional academic preparation (math and/or language) Are not ready to or able to leave home Want the affordability of the community colleges Unsatisfied with the four-year options available to them as a high school senior (increasing #)

Community College Goals Offer the Associates – 2 year academic degree Provide an “OPEN DOOR” to all high school graduates Provide remedial instruction; workforce training (certificate programs); AND, academic TRANSFER programs (THE ESSENTIAL COMPONENT – CCC students given highest PRIORITY in admission to the UCs and CSUs with junior standing (60+ transfer units) – over 4 year college transfers

IGETC - Inter-segmental General Education Transfer Curriculum 1991 – development of a COMMON pattern for GENERAL EDUCATION courses that transfer students complete and apply to all 9 UC and 23 CSU campuses See Advantages of CCC Experience (page 1) Strategies for Community College students (page 1 back)

Associate Degrees for Transfer Senate Bill 1440 in 2010 Joint effort of the CCCs and CSUs streamlining transfer process and A Degree with a Guarantee to complete Bachelor’s degree in 60 more units (top 37 majors) (page 3) 60 units at the CCC + 60 units at the CSU Result = priority admission/streamlined process/GPA “bump” Similarly UCs offer Transfer Pathways for top 21 majors

Associate Degrees for Transfer In 2011, their first year, 703 CCC students received an Associate Degree for Transfer statewide In 2017, over 38,000 students statewide received such “degrees with a guarantee” Goal by 2020 is 42,000 students statewide

UC’s Transfer Mission The University of California proudly enrolls more community college transfer students than any other university of its caliber. UC President Janet Napolitano
