Math Vocabulary Part 1

Know the definitions on the following slides! Prime Number A number with only two factors, one and the number itself. Composite Number A number with more than two factors. Factors Numbers you multiply together to get a certain product. (the basic facts of a number. Multiples The products you get when you multiply a certain number by other numbers. (skip counting by that number) Product The answer you get when you multiply. Quotient The answer you get when you divide. Difference The answer you get when you subtract. Sum The answer you get when you add.

Conjecture Variables Proper Factors Evaluate Estimate Base To make a guess in math based on your observations so far. Variables Letters used in math to take the place of numbers. Proper Factors All factors of any number except the number itself. Evaluate To solve or find the answer. Estimate Using rounding or some other method to determine “about” what the answer will be. NOT AN EXACT ANSWER! Base The factor you multiply by itself a certain number of times. Exponent (power) The number written small in the upper right corner to tell you how many times to multiply a factor by itself.
