Parents Information Evening Summer Term YEAR 5 Parents Information Evening Summer Term

Project: battle of Britain * Year 5 will study The Battle of Britain as an integrated unit of work combining English, Humanities (History and Geography) and Art (Visual Arts, Music, Drama) subject areas. * Possible Class Trip: The Imperial War Museum.

Other subject areas: discreet teaching * Mathematics, will continue to be taught discretely with a focus upon Shape (Including angles, 3d shapes and measurement) and Statistics across the Summer term. * Religion this term will focus upon a) How Muslims show commitment to God, and b) understanding faith in our local community (St Georges, Mayfair, London). * Science and Computers will continued to be taught on Thursdays with Mrs McLoughlin. * Year 5 will continue to work on the ‘DIY Fairground Rides’ throughout the Summer term with DT lessons conducted in the middle session on Fridays. * Ms Lorenzo will now teach Spanish to Year 5 on Tuesday afternoons.

Sport: swimming/ horse riding/ p.e * Swimming will continue on both the 18th and 25th of April (Wednesdays) before the pool becomes unavailable due to secondary school exams until the 18th of June. * I am currently liaising with the M.C.C (Marleybone Cricket Club – Lords) to organise a series of cricket sessions to take place on Wednesday mornings in lieu of swimming activities. * Horse riding will commence for the last group (Wassim, Ryan, Thalassa, Aine, Spartacus, Jemima, David, Leo) from the 2nd week of term on Tuesday mornings.

Homework expectations * Class homework will be sent home on most days with the expectation that it be attempted and returned the following day. * Spellings will continue to be conducted on Fridays with students continuing current lists from the second week of term. Students will be tested for any spellings they have got incorrect last term in the 1st week of the Summer term. * Spanish homework will be distributed weekly by Ms Lorenzo with the expectation it is completed and returned by the following Tuesday.

Book study: the London eye mystery * Students will continue to read ‘The London Eye Mystery’ by Siobhan Dowd as our class book study to address reading objectives in addition to weekly Guided Reading groups conducted by both Mr Cheeseman and Ms Lorenzo. * Students will also be given in class tasks relating to Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar that focus on The London Eye Mystery as the impetus. * If possible it is highly recommended that students either purchase or borrow the book, from a local library, in order to revise content at home as class reading time is limited and doesn’t permit individualized exploration of the text.

Important dates to remember Year 5 Class Assembly

Questions Please feel free to ask any questions regarding Year 5 and classroom activities this term. * If you have any questions/concerns throughout the remainder of the year please do not hesitate to contact me via email at bcheeseman@sghsprimary.co.uk and I will endeavor to get back to you as soon as possible. * Alternatively, please feel free to ask any questions at afternoon dismissal although please be aware that the safe dismissal of children is paramount so it is preferable that you wait patiently until the majority of children are dismissed.
