2.7 Combining Like terms 10/8/2012 LIKE TERMS are terms in an expression that have the same variable raised to the same power. The COEFFICIENT of a term is the number part of the product of a number and a variable. An expression is SIMPLIFIED if it has no grouping symbols and all the like terms have been combined.

Simplify the expression. 8 -2(x + 4) 2.7 Combining Like terms Simplify the expression. 8 -2(x + 4) Use the Distributive Property = 8 -2(x) + (-2)(4) Multiply = 8 -2x - 8 Combine Like Terms = -2x + 8 - 8 = -2x

Simplify the expression. 2(x + 3) + 3(5 – x) 2.7 Combining Like terms Simplify the expression. 2(x + 3) + 3(5 – x) Use the Distributive Property = 2(x) + 2(3) + 3(5) + 3(-x) Multiply = 2x + 6 + 15 – 3x Combine Like Terms = 2x – 3x + 6 + 15 = -x + 21
