You DO NOT need the Copyright symbol! Copyright just happens. The copyright symbol is just a reminder to others that the work is copyrighted.

METADATA is the modern © symbol Metadata is hidden information in a file to let you embed copyright information.

What makes something Copyright? Recorded in fixed form

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY! If the original holder of the copyright can’t show that your actions deprived them of money, you’re pretty safe.

You ALWAYS need the original author’s permission to use or copy their work. Except in “Fair Use”

After copyright expires OR if the author releases it to public domain

New way of managing copyright by expressly limiting specific uses of shared works

MOST IMPORTANT STUFF Copyright happens when something is recorded in “fixed form” If your actions don’t deprive the original artist of making money, you’re probably safe. “Public Domain” is expired or released copyright- safe to use! METADATA is a great way to embed copyright info in digital files.
