Learning to Drive

Learning Objectives To appreciate the likely costs of learning to drive To understand that learning to drive will require financial planning

Why drive? In pairs list the advantages and disadvantages of being able to drive Compare your ideas with the rest of the class

What might it cost to learn to drive? ‘Guesstimate’ what you think it will cost to learn to drive What do others in the class think it will cost? What’s the most expensive guess/least expensive guess?

What will you need to pay for? Is the cost of learning to drive just about the cost of the lessons? In pairs draw up a list of other things that will need to be paid for in order to learn to drive, share your ideas with the rest of the class.

Other costs to factor in Provisional licence fee Lessons Theory test fee Practical test fee Other costs (If learning with a friend/relative then no lesson costs but include petrol etc. and don’t forget insurance cover!) £34 (online - £43 by post) £22.50 per lesson approx (varies according to region) £23 £62 (£75 weekend and evenings) £25 (e.g. Highway code, revision materials) Do these ‘extra’ costs surprise you?

Roseanne’s story So far Rosanne has paid for:   Twenty lessons at an average of £21.50 each. A £16.99 CD-Rom to practise for her theory test. A theory test fee of £23 That’s a total of £…… Costs still to come will be: Another ten lessons at £21.50 each.   A practical test fee of £62. So, if Rosanne passes first time that’s a grand total of £………

Roseanne’s story continued … Suppose Rosanne fails at the first attempt … She needs another five lessons and has to pay for another practical test. That’s another… £…….. A pass second time makes a grand total of £……… Can you imagine finding this sort of money from your own budget?

Saving up to learn to drive Working in pairs and using the scenario card you’ve been given: How long will it take your character to save up? Do you think the saving’s plan is realistic? What happens if their situation changes e.g. they suddenly need money for something else? How do you think you might save up to learn to drive?

Learning to drive “Learning to drive is a luxury only the rich can afford?” Do you agree or disagree with this statement? What advice would they have for someone thinking about learning to drive?
