The Three Ways We Persuade Ethos (hand) Logos (head) Pathos (heart)

Where and when do people use persuasion? Commercials (radio, TV, internet, etc.) Written documents (articles, essays, newspapers, magazines, etc.) When someone wants you to do something for them!!

What is ethos? Ethos: refers to the credibility, respect or authority/expertise a person has. AKA the ethical appeal.

Why use ethos as a method to persuade? We tend to believe people whom we respect. Celebrities we like and admire appear more believable. An authority or expert on the subject can appear more trustworthy. When a product suggests it is authentic or “just like the real thing”, we are more likely to buy it.

What is logos? Logos: persuading by the use of reasoning and logic. AKA the logical appeal.

How to use logos as a method to persuade? Facts, statistics (%, numbers) Visual charts Research studies Progressive Insurance Commercial

What is pathos? Pathos: appealing to emotions - convincing you by how it makes you feel. AKA the emotional appeal.

How to use pathos as a method to persuade? Personal experience/anecdotes Anyone/anything you might care about An appeal to pathos causes an audience not just to respond emotionally, but to relate with the writer's/speaker’s point of view--to feel what the writer/speaker feels.
