Unpacking Learning Targets Lets all Read together… 1st Learning Target: “I can use items about the civil rights era to build background knowledge about A Mighty Long Way.” 2nd Learning Target 2. “I can analyze how incidents in A Mighty Long Way provoke Carlotta to make certain decisions and shape her story.” In this lesson, we are going to be introduced to a text called A Mighty Long Way.

A Mighty Long Way by Carlotta Walls LaNier Work Time Read-aloud A Mighty Long Way by Carlotta Walls LaNier

Turn to the Prologue - Page 6 Resource 1.3 What is a prologue of a book ? an introductory section before the book begins

Follow along in you heads as I read the Prologue aloud. Just Listen… Follow along in you heads as I read the Prologue aloud. “Carlotta begins the Prologue stating, ‘All week, I managed to keep my composure.’ What does composure mean? “ Composure means being calm and in control

What do we know about Carlotta Walls LaNier from the Prologue? Think and Discuss What do we know about Carlotta Walls LaNier from the Prologue? Discuss this with your groups members and answer this question by returning to the text to find the details and information to answer the question

Class Discussion and Share Who is Carlotta Walls LaNier? “What do we know about Carlotta Walls LaNier from the Prologue?” Carlotta was a teenager during desegregation. The first black, female graduate of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. She survived scare tactics from segregationists, or those who wanted to keep whites and blacks separate Left Little Rock just after graduation. She is older now, is still friends with the other “Little Rock Nine,” and has a family

The Battle… A little Background Info The battle over the desegregation of schools was between integrationists and segregationists. Schools before the 1950s were separate for black citizens and white citizens—they were segregated. In the mid-1950s, a movement began to integrate the schools—to desegregate them. The white citizens who fought this desegregation movement were called segregationists. Not all white citizens in the South were segregationists; in fact, many were not.

Who is Carlotta Walls LaNier? What values did Carlotta possess that shaped her story?” (Turn and Talk) Dedication Perseverance Confidence Hardworking Determination fortitude (having courage in the face of difficulties). What do all of these photographs have in common? (Turn and Talk) Discuss this questions with your group by practicing using the sentence starters (located on the bottom portion of the note-catcher). *** Try and move beyond the literal of what you all see in the photographs to what you can infer about the people in the photographs.

What do all of these photographs have in common? Many of the photographs feature the reality of segregation of races, protests over desegregation, and efforts toward desegregation of U.S. public schools in the 1950s.

Lesson 1 Closure Who can read aloud our first learning target? “I can use items about the civil rights era to build background knowledge about A Mighty Long Way.” In your groups discuss about what you know, what you wonder, and what you infer about the historical setting of A Mighty Long Way based on the Gallery Walk items. Once you have discussed this as a group, come up with one response for each: Know? Wonder? Infer? And write it on a post it. Neon Yellow= Know Blue=Wonder Pink=Infer

2nd learning Target Who can read aloud the second learning target? I can analyze how incidents in A Mighty Long Way provoke Carlotta to make certain decisions and shape her story.” In your groups discuss What is one detail or inference you can state about Carlotta as a character based on the incidents we have read about today?” Once you have discussed this as a group come up with one response and write your response on the pale yellow post it.

Individual Work Turn to Resource page 1.4 Close Read Chapter 1, A Mighty Long Way. Then you are to write the gist of what you read for homework and answer a focus question or a set of questions. You must complete the reading because we will be conduct our first literature circle tomorrow.

Homework Due Friday , February 9, 2018 Quiz on Vocabulary, Prologue and Chapter 1 of A Mighty Long Way.
