Eligibility for Financial Aid A student-athlete is eligible to receive institutional financial aid during any term provided: Undergraduate or graduate student with eligibility remaining Initially enrolled full-time during the term Conference and institutional eligibility Bylaw 15.01.5 Eligibility under that five-year rule
Permissible Sources of Financial Aid Institutional financial aid Parents and guardians Financial aid unrelated to athletics Established and continuing program United States Olympic Committee Bylaw 15.02.4.3
Institutional Aid Scholarships Grants Tuition waivers Employee dependent tuition benefits Loans Aid from government sources Bylaw 15.02.4.2 Employee dependent – document hire date of employee – minimum five years of employment
Full Grant-In-Aid Full Grant-In-Aid (FGIA) Period of Award Tuition and fees Room and board (housing and meals) Book Other expenses related to attendance at the institution up to the cost of attendance Bylaw 15.02.5 Period of Award Bylaw 15.02.7 & 15.3.3 Period of award – one academic year up to the remainder of the five-year period of eligibility **The period of award begins when a student-athlete receives any benefits as part of grant-in-aid or first day of class or practice, whichever occurs first Summer is a separate award from the regular academic year. Exceptions: Mid-year enrollment Final semester/term Graduated during previous AY in the summer and will exhaust eligibility during the following fall term One-time exception SA has not received aid prior and enrolled at least one full year Non recruited student Must be enrolled FT for at least one academic term Eligibility exhausted – medical non-counter Counter vs. non-counter
Counter A student-athlete becomes a counter if they receive any amount of athletic related aid or sch. Varsity FB or BB teams – but does not complete. Admissions and FA must be certified as unrelated to athletics ability.
Head Count Sports Limits for total number of counters Football Basketball (M and W) Women’s Volleyball Women’s Tennis W Gymnastics Count as 1
Equivalency Sports Limit total number of equivalencies that can be awarded Aid is express as a fraction
Individual Limits Total sum of student-athlete’s financial aid may not exceed cost of attendance. Pell Grant Bylaw 15.1 COA – FGIA + PELL OK Types of aid included in limit – Gov’t grants – gifts – pro spots stipends, loan, etc.
Team Limits “Counter” status All institutional aid counts towards institutional team limits Exception – exempted institutional financial aid Bylaw 15.02.3 Counter – A student-athlete receives institutional financial aid based in any degree on athletics ability
