–Instructional Technology   Session Track  –Instructional Technology                 Session Objective – Our objective is to share our experiences with upgrading our video on demand service from VBrick to Ensemble and the associated benefits to our faculty and students. We hope that others who might be interested in investing in or upgrading an existing video-on-demand service for their faculty and students might find value in our shared experiences and examples of faculty and student use in innovative ways. This session could be valuable for instructional technologists, librarians, IT staff, and faculty.                 Session Format – Joint presentation (Berea and Centre), followed by discussion and Q&A                               Description – We will each briefly share our experiences using VBrick, the old video-on-demand system, and some of the challenges we faced with providing our colleagues and students what they needed. Then we will each share our process of discovery and upgrade to our current system, Ensemble, and the benefits for faculty, students, and the administration of the system. We will share some examples of projects that faculty are having students create using Ensemble, and the increase in flexibility, security, and mobility this system provides. Ultimately, we will share our experiences with our colleagues in hopes that they might benefit from learning about a video-on-demand service, know some of the potential pitfalls, and learn the benefits of incorporating this type of system in a liberal arts environment.                 Session Facility Needs – Projector, internet access.

VoD Migration: Virtual Bricks            VoD Migration: Virtual Bricks Initial VBrick system showed signs of eventual failure Employed a WMA encoder VEMS Server only supported 50 concurrent users

New VBrick System Used a VBrick DME 7550 (Dell PowerEdge Server) for storage/streaming Virtual server for portal Ingested videos using H.264 hardware encoder Supported up to 1000 concurrent users

VBrick Issues Required browser plugin to for client machines to view videos Student viewers could not install plugin in student labs Browser updates would frequently cause viewing problems Browser plugin would have to be re-downloaded for each client Vbrick did not facilitate easy deployment of plugin No real time transcoding of old WMA content or batch conversion options While system was in use, there was no support for AVCHD video from camcorders LDAP integration was poorly implemented. Could not easily manage users based off of AD group membership

VoD Survey MediaCore Supported many LMS/CMS’s Had many features designed for education Mobile Device support (Android, iOS) Very Expensive Brightcove Priced, designed, and marketed more for corporate customers Did not offer Moodle integration Kaltura Offered on-premise hosting option Great Education Support Many Higher Ed customers Supported various LMS’s

Ensemble Video Offered LMS plugin for Moodle Mobile Device Support LDAP integration and user management are better than VBrick Utilizes Wowza + CarbonCoder Most affordable option for feature set Technical Support is very responsive
