CW#1 HOW DO DVD COVERS ATTRACT SPECIFIC AUDIENCES?

DVD Cover Analysis “HOW DO DVD COVER ATTRACT SPECIFIC AUDIENCES?” 2 DVD covers of different genres. Official DVD covers, not fan made. Front, Spine and Back.

How to write an analysis Start with the two Covers. Title: ‘DVD Cover Marketing Analysis’. Find a high-res image of your chosen Covers. Insert these under the title next to each other. Label each image. NAME TITLE DVD TITLE DVD TITLE

How to write an analysis Paragraph 1: Outline the target audience for your first DVD cover. Things to speak about What is the genre? Explain the conventions of the genre that give this away. What is the demographic that enjoys the genre? Be specific to age, gender What is the psychographic that enjoys your particular film? Be specific to likes, dislikes etc. Use a website called: https://today.yougov.com/profileslite#/ to help you.

How to write an analysis Paragraph 1 example: ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ (USA, 2015) is a science fiction film. On the DVD cover, genre conventions are used to demonstrate this. There are lasers, technology, robots, space craft and it appears the film is set in space. Typically, sci-fi demographics are males aged between 12-25. However, the demographic for ‘The Force Awakens’ is slightly larger as there is an appeal to existing fans of the original franchise. Due to it’s genre conventions the psychographic for the film is fans of science fiction and particularly fans of the existing films in the franchise.’

How to write an analysis Paragraph 2 and 3: Pick out formal conventions that help with the appeal of the DVD cover. Use lots of terminology. Formal conventions: Things all DVD cover have in common ‘The Force Awakens’ DVD cover uses specific formal conventions to appeal to an audience. For example, the ensemble cast is identified on the front cover. Moreover, as the female character is centre frame on the cover, she is the presumed to be the protagonist. Having her in the centre implies her importance to the narrative and will help an audience develop an attachment to that character. As well as this, the use of the Disney logo helps the audience identify brand quality, and combined with the PG rating, informs an audience of the DVD’s wide demographic appeal.

How to write an analysis Paragraph 4 and 5 and maybe 6: Pick out stylistic choices that help with the appeal of the DVD cover. Use lots of terminology. Stylistic choices: imagery and its connotations There is a clear binary opposition between good and evil developed on the cover. The use of bright blue, which could connote purity and tranquillity is juxtaposed with red, which has connotations of violence and anger. Moreover, the red is associated with a character who is costumed in black robes and a mask. His identity is enigmatic and his costume is similar to that of the grim reaper which therefore has connotations of death. This is also reinforced by the main image on the back cover of the DVD.

How to write an analysis Paragraph 7: Outline the target audience for your second DVD cover.

CW#2 How computer game companies represent the world to us through marketing campaigns?

Video Game Representation Analysis “HOW DO COMPUTER GAME COMPANIES REPRESENT THE WORLD TO US IN MARKETING CAMPAIGNS?” 1 game poster: gender representation only. 1 other game poster: gender representation and one other. 2 screenshots from first trailer: Gender representation only. 2 screenshots from second trailer: Gender representation and one other.

How to write a representation analysis Start with the two posters. Title: ‘Video Game Poster Marketing Analysis’. Find a high-res image of your chosen posters. Insert these under the title next to each other. Label each image. NAME TITLE GAME TITLE GAME TITLE

Production Information How to write a representation analysis Paragraph 1: Outline the production information about your first chosen video game. Consider the following: Production Information Full title of the video game and the release date What video game platform(s) was it released on? Franchise? Pegi Rating: what is the rating, why is it rated in that category? Production/development companies: are they ‘triple A’ or ‘indie’? Genre: First Person Shooter (FPS), Strategy, Sandbox, MMO (massively multiplayer online), RPG (Role Playing Game)

Production Information How to write a representation analysis Paragraph 2: Outline the production information about your second chosen video game.

How to write a representation analysis Paragraph 3: Outline the representation you are looking at in relation to the first poster. Pick out a detail to discuss. Use terminology. The release poster for The Elder Scrolls Online both challenges and reinforces established gender stereotypes. There is a number of connotations of gender in the poster’s mise-en-scene. The costuming of the female character arguably reinforces the sexualisation of females. It is revealing and tight fitting which emphasises the sexuality of the character. She appears to be an image of objectification for the audience.

How to write a representation analysis Paragraph 4: Pick out a second detail to discuss. Try to make a different point. Use terminology. The mise-en-scene also challenges gender roles. In terms of the fantasy RPG genre, males are archetypically the dominant force. Here, the dominant, confident stance of the female suggests her power and dominance. Cinematographically, she is being shot at a low angle, again emphasising her physical prowess.

How to write a representation analysis Paragraph 5: Outline the representations you are looking at in relation to the second poster. Pick out a detail to discuss. Use terminology. Compare to first poster. Like The Elder Scrolls, the release poster for Battlefield 1 reinforces stereotypes of gender. In relation to gender, the protagonist is male. This is conventional of the FPS genre. He is brandishing a pistol and a crude club. This choice of props connotes he is ruthless and brutal, typical traits of male action protagonists.

How to write a representation analysis Paragraph 6: Pick out a second detail to discuss. Try to make a different point. Use terminology. Although BF1 reinforces gender stereotypes, it does challenge established ethnic representations. Conventionally, action protagonists are white. The fact he is black challenges this established genre convention. In the poster, the audience assumes the character displayed is the protagonist. He is framed centrally in medium long shot, implying his importance to the game’s narrative.

How to write a representation analysis Now move on to the cinematic trailers. Title: ‘Video Game TV Advert/Trailer Analysis’. Take two screen shots from each trailer that you can directly refer to in your response. These should be screenshots that directly relate to your chosen representation. NAME TITLE Item 1 Item 2

How to write a representation analysis Paragraph 1: Outline the importance of cinematic trailers to video game success. Discuss the relevance of them to video game events like: E3, Xbox/PS4 Exclusives, console releases/bundles etc.

How to write a representation analysis Paragraph 2: Start by pasting in the two screen shots for your first trailer. Label them ‘Item 1’ and ‘Item 2’. Now work in exactly the same way as the poster analysis. Pick out a detail to discuss. Use terminology. Relate this paragraph to ‘Item 1’.

How to write a representation analysis Paragraph 3: Now work in exactly the same way as the poster analysis. Pick out a detail to discuss. Use terminology. Relate this paragraph to ‘Item 2’.

How to write a representation analysis Paragraph 4: Work in exactly the same way as the poster analysis. Pick out a detail to discuss. Use terminology. Compare the representation to the first trailer. Relate this paragraph to ‘Item 3’.

How to write a representation analysis Paragraph 5: Work in exactly the same way as the poster analysis. Pick out a detail to discuss. Use terminology. Compare the representation to the first trailer. Relate this paragraph to ‘Item 4’.

CW#3.1 STATISTICS PRESENT THIS INFORMATION IN A COLOURFUL, INTERESTING AND ENGAGING WAY. FOR EXAMPLE: Facebook, Instagram and Twitter followers. Awards won. Youtube hits. Most successful songs, albums, singles. Short biography. You can use things like: Charts Graphs Images

CW#3.2 MARKETING ANALYSIS PRESENT THIS INFORMATION IN A COLOURFUL, INTERESTING AND ENGAGING WAY. Annotating the image is the best way to construct your analysis. Choose a combination of poster or album art and explain how the work appeals to a target audience. YOU MUST LOOK AT 2 DIFFERENT PIECES OF MARKETING.

CW#3.2 MARKETING ANALYSIS For example: Serious expression could connote a strong moral message in the album Glittery typography hints at the pop music genre of the album. It has connotations of a disco ball Sexualised imagery makes work seem more risqué and challenging Contrasting and juxtaposing colours make the album eye catching and vibrant. It could reflect the musical genre Anchorage of the title to the genre of the artist as well as the classic art imagery behind Gaga Parental advisory sticker reinforces the challenging nature of the album There is always more to say than 6 points!
