Techniques to meet skills requirements D2

The CBI (Confederation of British Industry) has once again warned the Government that the UK is facing a 'skills emergency'. Their suggestion, and the opinion of many of its members, is that the education system in the UK is not developing enough skills to meet the needs of modern employers attempting to compete on the global stage.

The biggest concern is that the UK education system neither values nor organizes its vocational training adequately to meet employers' needs. Numeracy and literacy skills are inadequate, according to the CBI and UK students do not develop foreign language skills to a high enough level. All of which leads to a potential lack of economic growth as UK businesses can not progress at the same rate as their foreign counterparts. What impact will this have on UK businesses?

What have we done so far? We’ve conducted a skills audit to identify that there are skills missing from within a business. We have looked at how businesses identify missing skills and then recruit people to carry out these skills. But there are other methods:

Upskilling Teach (an employee) additional skills. This enhances their existing skill set. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dk6NZTmAgHM

Reskilling The process of learning new skills so you can do a different job, or of training people to do a different job:

Training To learn new skills for your job role Types of training: internal/external on-the-job/off-the-job mentoring coaching.

Outsourcing In business, outsourcing is "an agreement in which one company contracts-out a part of existing internal activity to another company". It involves the contracting out of a business process and operational, and/or non-core functions to another party.

Changing Job Roles This may involve adding new duties to a person’s job description, or changing completely what a job entails It may also have an element of job rotation to it where employees learn different skills within a business to carry out different jobs.

Restructuring This involves changing the organisational structure of the business.
