Engineering Project What is research?

What is the aim of research The aim of the research is to further develop you understanding of the problem and the possible solutions that you could incorporate into any initial designs To inspire you to consider solutions you had not previously considered To help you improve your technical understanding of technology and technics that you may need to use to help develop your final solution. Primary aim is to be able to use your research to right a full and comprehensive specification.

Further understanding the problem Areas of research Who is affected by the problem What are the affects of the problem Are there existing solutions, if yes what are they and are they any good. Analyse and evaluate any solution. What technology is being used Research you understanding of the technology used. Research your understanding of technology that could be applied to solve the problem. Research materials and processes.

The two categories of research Qualitative Research Qualitative Research is primarily exploratory research. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides insights into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative research. Qualitative Research is also used to uncover trends in thought and opinions, and dive deeper into the problem. Qualitative data collection methods vary using unstructured or semi-structured techniques. Some common methods include focus groups (group discussions), individual interviews, and participation/observations. The sample size is typically small, and respondents are selected to fulfil a given quota Quantitative Research Quantitative Research is used to quantify the problem by way of generating numerical data or data that can be transformed into usable statistics. It is used to quantify attitudes, opinions, behaviours, and other defined variables – and generalize results from a larger sample population. Quantitative Research uses measurable data to formulate facts and uncover patterns in research. Quantitative data collection methods are much more structured than Qualitative data collection methods. Quantitative data collection methods include various forms of surveys – online surveys, paper surveys, mobile surveys and kiosk surveys, face-to- face interviews, telephone interviews, longitudinal studies, website interceptors, online polls, and systematic observations.

Things research will contain Image boards Information from dater sheets Annotated documents Mind maps Web pages Evidence of practical testing e.g.- circuits made up, feasibility studies of 3D prints. Practice machined pieces.

My Project Brief I want to look into making a adult night light that is motion censored so that when I come down at night to use the toilet I don’t have to turn on any lights. I want it to only be active when I am in bed.

Led Night Light - Sensky BS126 Plug In Night Light, Motion Sensor Light Bulbs, Aukora 12W ➤Specs: Output Power: 12W(100-Watt Equivalent); Input Voltage: AC85-265V; Cold White (6000-6500K); Luminous: 1000lm; Lamp Style:E26. ➤PIR Motion Sensor Included: High quality PIR infrared sensor is installed at the tip of bulb, so the motion sensor bulb will light up automatically while it detects motion within 8-10 FT in the dark, and automatically off after the motion ceased or disappeared about 60 seconds. NOTE: Make sure the sensor is pointing down within proper distance and angle ➤Built-in Dusk to Dawn Sensor: This smart bulb will automatically switches ON at dusk when the motion sensor is activated and OFF at dawn.(Turn on below about 15Lux and off about above 40Lux) ➤Energy Saving and Usage Occasion: These security night light bulbs only light up in the detective range at night or in dark environment, energy-saving, environment protecting and long life, can be use in stairs, hallway, bathroom, front door, storage room, garage, closet, balcony, gate and so on. The higher you hang the bulb, the larger detection range it achieves as the highest could be 10 feet vertically This Plug-In Night Light with motion and light sensor is ideal for adding a natural light in nurseries, children's bedrooms, landings and hallways. The night light consists of 9 LEDs: front light (which activate in darkness and turn off automatically when light is detected) and rear light. Automatically rear light switch on when it detects people's motion in the dark, and stays on for 60 seconds. Adjustable mode: Auto / on. The single strip, which is on all the time, the slit of light at the front being perfectly sufficient to guide you until it picks up your movement and comes on fully.. Current Solution

Talk about different methods of achieving your desired results and where you got the inspiration Link to dater sheet with examples of how to use it with an Arduino. https://www.rapidonline.com/pdf/78-4110_v1.pdf Panasonic AMN14111 Pir Sensor 10m Long Range A highly compact PIR sensor housed in a TO5 package fitted with a zoned fresnel lens. The sensor detects infra-red radiation in the low infrared spectrum (10µm wavelength) which is emitted by human movement. The sensors are able to detect a change in temperature from object to ambient from as little as 3°C. Changes in the level of detected emission are evaluated by a window comparator and if the change exceeds the upper or lower threshold the output level of the sensor goes high and can be used to trigger external circuitry. One type of motion sensor I have found is an inferred PIR sensor it………………. After reading through the regulation and doing research about the standards a lamp or light must conform to I have found out that. I must use (x specific material) materials and it need to work of (x specific) voltages. I must now considered whether my product should plug in or if it will be wired it. To do this I will continue my research by looking at regulations for portable appliances to see if there are any legal specifications my product would have to conform to. Regulations about lighting

My research has led me to look at Arduinos to controlee timing and the PIR sensor I have looked at. I have found out…… I will use the following videos to help me……. I hope to be able to……. Arduinos
