Mid Course Survey Our Course in Action

Complete the mid-course survey In your Canvas course, please navigate to the “Important Course Resources” module. A link to a mid-course survey has been placed there. Please click on the link and complete the short survey. Answers are anonymous, so please share honestly.

Designing the Survey 1 The purpose of the survey is to get feedback from students to improve the course. The researchers need to decide between four potential ways to collect the data. Which of these methods is likely to get the highest response rate? The survey is sent out to students centrally via email and they are asked to voluntarily respond. Survey is sent out to students centrally via email and students are given participation points for completion. The survey is completed in class while the instructor is present. Students are given time in class to fill out the survey while the instructor is absent.

Designing the Survey 2 The purpose of the survey is to get feedback from students to improve the course. The researchers need to decide between four potential ways to collect the data. Which of these methods is likely to have the most bias? After answering, discuss what bias is likely to occur. The survey is sent out to students centrally via email and they are asked to voluntarily respond. Students are given time in class to fill out the survey while the instructor is absent.

Designing the Survey 3 The purpose of the survey is to get feedback from students to improve the course. The researchers need to decide between four potential ways to collect the data. In which of these scenarios do you think the students are most likely to give honest answers, that is, the data is most useful to the researchers? The survey is sent out to students centrally via email and they are asked to voluntarily respond. Survey is sent out to students centrally via email and students are given participation points for completion. The survey is completed in class while the instructor is present. Students are given time in class to fill out the survey while the instructor is absent.

Asking the Questions The first question of the survey asks for students to agree or disagree with several statements. What is likely to result in the most bias with this question? Students might not understand how to answer the question. The wording of several of the statements includes terms that are not well defined such as “regular feedback”, “well organized”, or “clear”. The answers the researchers want are obvious from the wording of the questions.

Improving the Survey/Course For discussion: Do you think this survey will be useful to researchers trying to get data to improve Math 1090/1091? What other methods could researches use to gather such data? Do you have any other suggestions for questions to be included in the survey for future semesters?
