8th Grade Independent Health/PE Ms. Swanson

Please note – This course is designed for independent learners who are capable of taking on the workload of an extra academic class. Please make sure this class is a good fit for your student. All course requirements must be completed to receive a passing grade.

Orientation Dates   Students taking the Independent Health Class need to attend an orientation meeting at school.                                                                               Parents do not need to attend.     Students need  to choose from one of the  following dates to attend the orientation:  Tuesday September 11th at 2:45 PM Wednesday September 12th at 9:30 AM Monday September 17th at 4 PM Thursday September 18 at 2:45 PM All meeting are in 3011 The orientation will be approximately 20 minutes long. At the orientation you will find out everything you need to know for the class.  You must attend one of the meetings.  It is mandatory.  See you then. 

Pay $130 class fee to Ms. Rapoza Full payment due by February 3rd, 2017. Preferably online Textbook: 2 options Use the online textbook (directions in the syllabus) Check out a text in the library with your ASB card. Course Requirements

Course Requirements Book Work Read the assigned chapters Thoroughly answer the required end of lesson assessments. (See the list of required questions in the syllabus on my website) Use complete sentences to thoroughly answer the questions (except for multiple choice) When there is a vocabulary word define the word. Print your work back to back if possible to save paper. Submit work in one Microsoft Word document (size 10 font) Each new chapter needs to start at the top of a new page, clearly labeled with the chapter # and student’s name. Do not staple each chapter together individually. Put your work in a 9 ½ by 12 ½ folder. Turn into me or the office Course Requirements

There are two due dates for the Book Work Chapters 1-9 are due on January 18th Chapters 10-12,15,19-22,26 & 27 are due on April 30th

FLASH – HIV/AIDS Sign up for and attend 2 classes Session 1: Reproductive System and Pregnancy, Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation, Birth Control and Saying No. Session 2: Communication skills, Rules of Dating and Healthy Relationships, Condoms to prevent HIV and other STD’s. Correction Session 1….Friday, March 2 (not 3rd!) Email Jamie McKinley: student name, school, preferred dates. She will confirm the class you are signed-up for. Each class is limited to 25 students! Acceptable Fitness activities: Do Not Use Acronyms- Fully explain the activity Individual, Dual or Team sports Exercise/Fitness classes Any exercise that gets the heart rate into the target heart rate zone (24-28 beats for a 10 second pulse count). At this level of exercise, students should be breathing hard. No more than 1 1/2 hours per day. Activities/sports that include a coach/trainer who will verify fitness levels and time commitment The intent is that you are getting a good workout and are achieving or maintaining a healthy fitness level. Please contact Ms. Swanson if you have questions

Fill out log as you complete hours. Unacceptable fitness activities: Walking ( the dog, to school, at school, to the bus stop), zip line, sledding/snowmobiling unless you are pushing the snowmobile. It needs to be an cardiovascular activity that raises the heart rate to 120-140 bpm or more and is sustained. Fill out log as you complete hours.

Coursework should be placed in a 9 1/2 by 11 ½ envelope with the your name on the outside. You can turn this into Ms. Swanson in 3211, or take it to the office and the secretary can put it in our teacher boxes. Coursework cannot be turned in electronically Course Requirements
