A “cold war” does not involve fighting. In a “cold war,” countries might threaten each other, build up weapons, ban trading, etc.

After WWII, the United States and Russia had a “cold war.” They had different beliefs about how to set up governments – communism???

Soviet Union People living in the Soviet Union were not able to leave. Armed guards stood at the borders. There is now a dividing line between eastern and western Europe. An iron curtain has fallen! Winston Churchill

COMMUNISM!!!! COMMUNISM is when the The Soviet Union was all about citizens are not free. The government has control!

East Germany (controlled by the Soviet Union) West Germany (controlled by Allies)

The Soviet Union tried to keep supplies, such as food and fuel, out of West Germany! The United States wanted to help West Germany, so they flew planes and dropped supplies into West Berlin.

The U.S. did this for 321 days! This was known as the BERLIN AIRLIFT!

1953 Korean War! COMMUNISTS Not COMMUNISTS

North and South Korea were divided along the 38th Parallel.

Korean War Let’s invade South Korea and spread communism! The U.S. will help, and I will ask other countries to help too (United Nations)! No! We don’t want to be communist!

Korean War Ended in a stalemate.
