Definition of Terms What is diversity? What is inclusion? The fact or quality of diverse; difference. A point or respect in which things differ. The ways we are different; the condition of having unique characteristics. What is inclusion? The act of including or the state of being included. Something included.

Aspects of diversity Age Education Race Job title, function, skills Gender Ethnicity Sexual orientation Religion Physical attributes etc. Education Job title, function, skills Disability Height/Weight Marital status Language/Accent

Why is it important to understand diversity? Diversity is more than just tolerating differences. It is: Respecting, appreciating, understanding the varying characteristics of individuals. Everyone is unique and no single person is a representative of a certain group. Stereotyping and other racial biases/prejudices are damaging to a business.

Consequences of not managing diversity Discrimination Breeds narrow mindedness Impairs employee morale Strains employee relationships And thus, damages productivity Not to mention, it is ILLEGAL

Defining Inclusion Inclusion is the process of valuing all individuals and leveraging their diverse talent, not in spite of their differences, but because of them. Inclusion is leveraging the diversity in the workforce to achieve full participation and performance; it empowers differences.

“Diversity describes the spectrum of human similarities and differences. It refers to the composition of people associated with the organization. Inclusion, on the other hand, describes the way an organization configures opportunity, interaction, communication, information and decision-making to utilize the potential of diversity.”

Lead by example… Ford Motor Company – Diversity embodies all the differences that make us unique individuals. At Ford Motor Company we recognize diversity as a strategic advantage in today’s global marketplace. We are committed to building an inclusive culture that leverages all of the many elements of diversity; encourages innovation; allows employees to perform to their fullest potential; and, ultimately, drives business results.
