What are SATS? Towards the end of Key Stage 2, all Year 6 pupils take the KS2 SATS. (Statutory Assessment Tests) The children are assessed by tests in English and Numeracy during the middle of May each year. Teachers also assess their general day to day progress as part of their Teacher Assessment.
What do they test? English is separated into different aspects as follows: Writing– (teacher assessment only) Reading Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling
Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Spelling test Spelling investigations Grammar lessons in isolation and during writing lessons Piece of text with gaps that’s read aloud several times Children carry out spelling investigations weekly in class and it is important that they learn the spelling rules at home. Handwriting could be difference between level ¾ or 4/5
Maths is tested by 3 papers Paper 1 - Arithmetic Paper 2 – Reasoning Paper 3 - Reasoning NO CALCULATORS ALLOWED Both papers involve a lot more problem solving.
What happens after the tests? Maths and Reading are marked externally. Writing will be marking internally and moderated by staff/local authority Returned before the end of term. Parents receive the results in school reports.
What happens if my child misses a test? Children who miss a test are recorded as absent and are not given a test level in that subject.
Hot tips for parents Remember your child's education is a partnership. Meet with teachers and see how they believe you can help. - Approach a subject from lots of different angles. - Look through a practice paper together and talk through the answers, try drawing or acting out answers of difficult concepts such as fractions. - Make sure your child is aware that getting stuck is not a problem, move on and if they have time come back to the hard ones at the end. - Remind your child that the tests are important, but that they are not the only way they are to be measured.
SATS tips Do homework early Agree a routine for homework with your child. A good time for homework is after a short break when your child returns from school, get it out of the way early, leaving the rest of the evening free - who wants to start work at 7.00pm Life can become a constant 'nag' if you do not start this from the beginning
