Mayweather vs. McGregor By the Numbers

19.5 million Throughout his career, Mayweather has helped generate nearly 20 million pay-per-view buys, including the three most-purchased bouts in history—2.4 million against Oscar De La Hoya in 2007, 2.2 million against Canelo Alvarez in 2013 and 4.6 million against Manny Pacquiao in 2015

$600 million The total projected gross revenue for the bout, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell, which would place it second only to the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight (it should be noted many analysts predict it could break even that record)

$4.8 million The price tag for the rare luxury car, a Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita, that Mayweather added to his collection in 2015, according to Rolling Stone Magazine. The magazine said the ride maxes out at 254 mph and goes from 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds.

$100 million According to Keith Idec of Boxing Scene, Mayweather is expected to make at least $100 million but his take could earn four times that much if the event hits all of its monetary metrics. McGregor will make at least $75 million, which is five times as much as he's made from any UFC event.

$99.95 The pay-per-view price to see the fight on Showtime in HD is $99.95, the same price HBO charged for 2015’s “Fight of the Century” between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao

$40 Movie theaters around the country will be showing the fight at a reported cost of $40 per ticket. No, popcorn is not included.

$164,043 At one point, a seller on the Vivid Seats website (an online ticket re-seller) listed a pair of ringside seats for the contest at $164,043 each

$3,500 When tickets were first released through Ticketmaster’s website, the cheapest tickets available started at $3,500

$7,000 The average ticket price on StubHub was $7,000 in the week leading up to the fight

$60 million Because ticket prices were so high, demand was much lower than expected with tickets still remaining just five days before the fight. However, the fight had already grossed over $60 million in ticket sales.

$17.7 million Compare that figure to the largest gate McGregor has ever been involved with at $17.7 million

$100 million While perhaps a bit optimistic, some industry analysts have suggested international broadcast rights could reach as much as $100 million

$10 million The asking price to be the title sponsor of the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight was a reported $10 million

$20 million Sponsorships for the fight – which, bizarrely, have yet to be announced and thus hasn’t allowed the kind of branding seen on other major sporting events – was estimate to surpass $20 million

$5 million Some analysts are predicting over $5 million in the sale of fight related licensed merchandise

$500 According to the Las Vegas Convention Visitors Authority, a basic room at the MGM Grand for fight night was over $500 just a few days before the event

$35,000 Villas at Caesars Palace (starting at $25,000 a night) and Nobu Hotel at Caesars Palace ($35,000 a night) have all been sold out for the weekend

$100 million Mayweather’s team estimates his fights, on average, have at least a $100 million impact on the Las Vegas economy

Discussion Questions

Why do you think this fight is expected to generate so much revenue? What is publicity? How has publicity helped create so much excitement for this fight? What is economic impact? What is revenue? What are the various revenue streams from this fight that will pad the pockets of both fighters?

Why do you think Mayweather will make more money on this fight than McGregor? How might the UFC benefit from this fight? Do you thin this fight benefits the sport of boxing? Why or why not? Will you (or did you) watch? Where?
