Reading Quiz #1- Standard 5.2 Choose one set of questions to answer by answering who, what, when, where and WHY it’s significant. Use your notes. What was President Harding’s “call to normalcy” and why was it significant? What were fears Americans had after WWI? Why did Americans have these fears?

House of Cards Competition You and a neighboring Home Group will build a house of cards. The goal is to build a taller house compared to the other two groups in only 5 minutes. There are a few students who will sabotage your own group’s progress because I told them to do it. They are called, “sneaks”. Beware of the “sneaks” and good luck!

I. Election of 1920 & a return to “Normalcy” Fresh memory of WWI Senate refused to accept the Treaty of Versailles and continued to debate about joining the League of Nations Weary of war with other countries and sacrifice at home Goal: Reboot the US economy after the war Warren G. Harding’s Presidency http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-T0yNynoSlU

II. The Red Scare of the 1920s Communism Socialism Anarchy the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state. the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole. the absence of governmental control: lack of obedience to an authority

A. Russian Revolution Czar Nicholas II lost his popularity and power on March 1917 as many Russians were unhappy with Russia’s involvement in WWI as it brought deaths and food Shortages 1. Russians revolted and were supported by Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks: “peace, land & bread!”, “End the War! All land to the peasants!” 2. Lenin and the Reds gave all farms, industries, land and transportation to the government to own and spread among all 3. Civil war breaks out between Lenin’s “Red” Army and the Whites (former land owners, supported by the United States)

B. Soviet Union (USSR) established 1920 Communism the official ideology of the Soviet Union 1. Government owns all land and property 2. One political party controls the government 3. The needs of the country were the priority over individuals’ rights 4. For communism to survive, it must spread Question: How do communist ideologies conflict with American ideologies?

C. American Fears (already paranoid from the war) 1. European immigrants may also be Communists 2. Workers went on strike 3. yellow journalism 4. Red Scare 5. Americans demand communists are jailed or deported

D. How did American Fears show in different events? Sacco and Vanzetti Trial The Story: On April 15, 1920 a gunman robbed and killed a paymaster of a shoe factory in Massachusetts. A few weeks later, police arrest two Italian immigrants who were radicals. The police found the men with guns that were similar to the gun used at the scene of the crime. Americans believed they were arrested because they were immigrants. After the trial, the men were found guilty and were sentenced to death. Why would this event be controversial?
