Why Your Mentor Wants You to Get Good Grades

One thought, you might want to focus a tad more on is exactly how much money they will need to survive post-high school.  Maybe a simple visual for one thing, say transporation.  You could show cost to ride the bus for a year, cost to buy and maintain a beater car and cost to buy and maintain a nice car.    Oh, I think it's good to show what happens if you don't go to college and what kinds of jobs would then be available. Possibly a table of diff types of jobs and their salaries

In Colorado from September 2013 through August 2014, the average unemployment rate for those with less than a high school diploma was 8.9 percent; the rate for those who completed high school was 5.2 percent. For those with some post-secondary training, it dropped to 4.7 percent. (http://www.denverpost.com/smart/ci_26893850/career-building-trades-retains-strong-attraction-students#)

Students who end their ninth grade year on-track (that is, having enough credits to be promoted to tenth grade and having earned no more than one semester F in a core course) are almost four times more likely to graduate from high school than those who are off-track. In fact, a student’s on-track status is more predictive of high school graduation than their race/ethnicity, level of poverty, or test scores. http://ccsr.uchicago.edu/sites/default/files/publications/On-Track%20Validation%20RS.pdf DON’T USE THIS SLIDE IF STUDENTS ALREADY HAVE MORE THAN 1 F, BECAUSE IT’S POTENTIALLY TOTALLY DEMOTIVATING.

Part 4: So Let’s Talk About Jobs

-4 -3 -2 -1 NOW 1 2 3 4

There are some jobs that you qualify for now, & will be able to get in 4 years… …Even if you don’t finish high school.

An if you don’t finish high school, you can always go back and get your GED. But if you know people who have done this or tried to do this, talk to them, before you plan on not finishing school! It’s not easy! DPS dropout rate: 45%

There are some jobs that you will be able to get… If you graduate from high school.

If you graduate from high school… You can always go back to school later in life, and get a certificate, or a 2-year degree, or 4-year degree, etc. People do this… Because they want to get a better job, and/or Because they want to learn more about something that interests them.

If you graduate from high school and get a diploma from a 4-year college… …You can always go back to school later in life, and get more education, like an M.D. (doctor), J.D. (lawyer), Ph.D. (college professor), D.V.M. (veterinarian), M.Div. (pastor) or others . People do this… Because they want to get a better job, and/or Because they want to learn more about something that interests them.

Part 5: That Was A Lot of Information. What’s My Point?

Remember This Slide…?

-4 -3 -2 -1 NOW 1 2 3 4 How Will You Get This So You Can Have This?
