Welcome to Mrs. Henry’s Curriculum Night!

You learn to write better by reading You learn to write better by reading. You learn to read better by writing. Reading and writing work together to improve your ability to think.

Reader’s Workshop Genre Studies on Historical Fiction and Biography Author Study on Patricia Polacco Science/Social Studies Units Lots of daily reading time. Focus on critical thinking and thoughtful responses. Students need to be reading at home. Homework will include 30 minutes of reading, 4 nights per week.

WRITER’S WORKSHOP Genre studies on Historical Narrative, Informational Feature Article, and Opinion Essay Authentic use of the Writing Process Use of technology Research Lots of writing will take place in all subject areas!! Big focus on being specific and detailed.

Grammar & Word Study Figurative Language Prefixes, suffixes & root words Verb Tenses Identifying synonyms, homophones, antonyms, etc…. Vocabulary Handwriting: Cursive

Fractions Place Value and Base 10 2-digit multiplication Long division (3-4 digits by one digit) Measurement/conversions Measuring and drawing angles Problem solving Very important to build speed and fluency in multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction facts, reflexmath.com is a great resource for practice.

Planners Planners filled out daily Parent signature each night Help keep students organized and is a tool they will use throughout the rest of their school career. Students receive a sticker and BEST sticker each day for signed planners.

Technology All students have an Office 365 account. Online version of Microsoft Office. Gives them access to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.. Allows them to share documents with me. They can work at home and at school!! VSE Symbaloo gives them quick easy route to all sites used at school or needed for homework. Field Trips Arts Partners Field Trip to Coterie Children’s Theatre – March Jefferson City Capitol Tour – May Must have turned in volunteer packet. Background check must be complete. If you want to know if you have been approved, contact the office.

Scholastic Book Orders Sent home monthly Books purchased earn bonus points for the classroom library. Great opportunity to earn free books for our classroom library. Online ordering earns our classroom free books.
