How do Swindon Learning Ambassadors attract beneficiaries? Good Morning This presentation is about a project that we undertook as a team as part of the teamwork element of our training. After an initial idea of Nancy’s we decided to investigate how we attract beneficiaries to learn from what is working in the different areas We scheduled team meetings and had agendas and minutes written up We agreed on responsibilities and produced Action Points for ourselves.

Different Approaches Penhill- Brochures & Course Management Pinehurst & Moredon- Local events Central- Look programme From the initial meeting, we discussed what we do in our different areas to attract beneficiaries Pinehurst Nancy explained that the Pinehurst area does not have a base of people which can be seen as beneficiaries. The team has a room at Pinehurst People’s centre the rest of which are let out to lots of different people. Nancy has met beneficiaries at the doctor’s surgery, the Credit Union and the NEST group. The Pinehurst Newsletter encourages young people to feedback aswell as the mature residents. Nancy has observed that girls with young children don’t like to commit 6-8 weeks of their time so ‘taster sessions’ are set up. Nancy suggested possible buddying between area teams to see learn how different teams work. Penhill Dinah said that the Penhill team meets to discuss what courses to run taking into account feedback from previously run courses. A course brochure is compiled and then distributed to all of Penhill and some of the surrounding areas. Central Mel highlighted that because the Central Area team is based at Drove School, they have a pool of learners ‘on their doorstep’. She networks with people in the playground and the team also advertises via posters. Mel has developed contacts with Townsend House and is piloting a course for girls there Mina said that the Central team keeps lists of beneficiaries are kept so that they can be signposted to other courses. They also keep their present beneficiaries updated with the next course programme Mina said Carol owns the mailing list for the updated LOOK programme in the Central team. Mina has sent leaflets to the hospital, doctor’s surgeries and community centres. She also takes responsibility for ensuring they have an updated version. Current learners are advised of upcoming courses and asked to bring a friend to the next course. The Central team recently held an ‘Adult Learner Tea Party' where they asked learners if they were happy with their facilities and progress and what else they would like to do there. The project team was interested in this idea of surveying learners for all their areas and analysing the feedback.

Teamwork Activities Develop Survey Distribute + collate information Feedback results seeing that we had a current pool of beneficiaries we decided to put together a simple survey to find out what different factors had helped them attend the courses. We attended the classes to explain why the information was wanted and then we put it together and examined the results.

Survey Results The results showed that the beneficiaries appreciate learning locally because over three quarters of them walked to the course venue and they would recommend it to friends and family. The chart on screen shows that the main way that they had found out about the course was from an LA.

Project Results Shared Ideas Worked well as team Learned new ways of attracting beneficiaries In terms of the overall team project – we feel that we have shared our ideas in the way we work. Team members have had different responsibilities in the project and we think we have worked well together e.g. Mel – agenda + presentation Carolyn - meeting chair Everyone - questions for survey Mina - compiling survey Nancy discussion in meetings Dinah presentation structure We use different methods for attracting beneficiaries which currently work well for the beneficiaries of that area

Suggestions Buddying systems between areas Develop relationships with other Org’s Help achieve Matrix accreditation Review Through our discussions we came up with a number of suggestions Buddying with another LA from a different area to see them in action. Further develop relationships with other organisations so that we would be better known to them for a beneficiary to be referred to and vice versa. If we are more aware of the approaches each area follows, we will be able to provide a more uniform service to achieve Matrix accreditation To hold regular reviews to learn from what colleagues are doing in other areas.
